Femoral component wear in retrieved hip prostheses.
We retrieved 159 femoral heads at revision surgery to determine changes in surface configuration. Macroscopic wear of the head was observed in three bipolar hip prostheses as a result of three-body wear. There was a considerable change in surface roughness in the internal articulation of bipolar hip prostheses. Roughness in alumina heads was almost the same as that in new cobalt-chromium heads....
متن کاملClinical and Wear Analyses of 9 Large Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Prostheses
BACKGROUND Metal-on-Metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasties (THA) are associated with pseudotumor formation and high revision rates. This prospective study analysed the clinical and wear analyses of 9 large Metal-on-Metal (MoM) total hip arthroplasties (THA) to understand the underlying mechanisms of failure. The MoM bearings were revised for multiple reasons; the main reason was pseudotumor forma...
متن کاملWear simulation of total hip prostheses with polyethylene against CoCr, alumina and diamond-like carbon.
The wear of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene acetabular cups was studied with a new biaxial hip wear simulator using diluted calf serum as a lubricant. The cups had been packed and gamma-irradiated in argon. The cups were articulated against two established types of femoral head, alumina and CoCr, and one experimental type, CoCr coated with diamond-like carbon (DLC). The diameter of the...
متن کاملTribology of total hip arthroplasty prostheses
Although total hip arthroplasty (THA) has provided good results for over forty years, the choice of the optimal bearing surface still remains controversial. Tribology is defined as “the branch of science and technology that deals with the study of friction, wear, and lubrication”.1 Tribology is fundamental to the function and long-term survival of orthopaedic implants. With the development of h...
متن کاملInfection of total hip prostheses by Peptococcus
In two cases of infected total hip replacements, Peptococcus magnus was isolated in pure culture from the implant when it was removed. Fluorescent antibody and ELISA studies have shown that both patients developed an antibody response to this anaerobic coccus soon after the replacement operation. These results suggest that the organism is a true infective agent, which was probably responsible f...
